Attention vintage black! Okay, George Pelecanos is (almost) become a habit. Except Drama City, thirteenth novel translated into French tenor of the American crime novel, is stunning. A little outside of his previous books, it looks like a variation on its themes more humanistic fetishes, violence and urban poverty. Pelecanos ignores his detective of Greek origin – like himself – Stefanos Nicolas (Nick’s galley, Anacostia River Blues). Exit also Dimitri Karras and Marcus Clay music store (King Suckerman, Suave as eternity, Funky Guns), or the former cop Derek Strange (White as Snow, Hell to Pay, Soul Circus)..
Lorenzo Brown also was born there, grew up there. But it went wrong: smoking marijuana at age 12, he became a dealer in the pay of big shots from the corner before finishing the hole. Eight years later, started his thirties, he’s back in his old neighborhood of Park View, determined to toe the line by working for the Humane Society, the city pound. Every day, Lorenzo puts on his uniform and goes through the city to rescue dogs abused, malnourished, or worse, trained for fighting illegal. Every day, Lorenzo applies to the task, dreams of starting a family and trying to avoid his old friends – Nigel Johnson and Deacon Taylor, who took control of drug trafficking.
